Overview: Swedish Family Medicine Residency (SFMR) has a strong commitment to social justice and health equity. The Culture & Diversity Curriculum seeks to engage residents and faculty by encouraging personal and professional development through self-reflection, knowledge acquisition, and dialogue in order to address multiculturalism, implicit bias, and racism.  

The curricular topics are updated frequently based on current events and pressing health concerns. See below for an example of topics that have been addressed in the curriculum:

  • Cultural Competency: Identifying Gaps In Trainin

  • Implicit Bias: What To Actually Do About 

  • Cultural Appropriation vs. Cultural Exchange 

  • Structural Competency: Beyond the Individual Level

  • Immigration: Structural Biases

  • Racism as Experienced by Physicians of Color: Institutional Racism, Racism from Colleagues, and Racism from Patients

Other Diversity/Anti-racism Work:

  • Diversity Committee comprised of residents and faculty

  • Implicit Bias M&M

  • Resident-led anti-racism reading group

  • Involvement with local community health fairs
