Objective
Residents may choose to pursue an away elective to obtain specific clinical or research experience away from Swedish. This experience may provide residents additional training in areas pertinent to their future goals of practice, or access to specific patient populations or settings of interest.
An away rotation is defined as any block rotation where the resident spends 3 weeks or more away from their continuity clinic. It is possible that a resident may complete 2 away electives during residency. It is much preferred that one of these away electives is completed during R-2 year and the other during R-3 year. There is no expectation that all residents are entitled to or will pursue an away elective.
Criteria
· Residents should begin planning for potential away rotations as soon as they are aware of the next year’s academic block schedule.
· A proposal including location, educational content, goals and objectives, supervision, and a plan for evaluation must be presented to the advisor a minimum of 4 months in advance of the desired away rotation.
· Clinic chief(s), scheduling admin (Liz Stahl), and the clinic’s medical director must agree that the away elective does not negatively impact provider scheduling and patient access at the resident’s primary clinic site.
· Resident must be on track to meet minimum number of clinic visit counts or have a specific proposal for a clinic-focused elective to improve clinic numbers.
· The final proposal must be approved by the advisor and the program director no more than 3 months prior to the elective.
· Resident may not take more than 1 week of vacation adjacent to an away elective.
· No away rotations may be scheduled during the months of June and July due to the transition of residents into and out of the residency program.
· A Training Agreement must be completed between Swedish and the hosting Practice Physician or Designee. Once the elective experience is approved, please let the program administrator know and they will work with the remote site to get this agreement completed PRIOR to the start of the rotation.
