Areas of Concentration
Within the program, residents have the opportunity to focus their learning into Areas of Concentration in order to further hone the skills they might find relevant to their future clinical practice. Each AOC allows residents to gain credits toward the area through clinical experiences, community outreach events, resident-led seminars, and/or projects within each particular field of interest.
Global Health
We are witnessing a pivotal time for family medicine expansion globally. Many countries are reorienting family medicine as the cornerstone of their health care system in order to provide comprehensive cost effective care with limited resources. Although the practice of Family Medicine will have distinct characteristics around the world, the core values remain: providing care that meets the fundamental health needs of the patient, is integrated, is prioritized, and offers healing above cure when appropriate. Residents who are interested in the global impact of family medicine expansion are encouraged to learn about and participate in a variety of global health opportunities throughout their residency.
Objectives
Increase medical knowledge about HIV, TB, Malaria, and other conditions that are more prevalent in the developing world
Increase comfort with practicing medicine in a resource poor setting
Experience healthcare disparity first hand
Expand understanding of the interplay between culture and medicine; improve cultural competency
Appreciate the geopolitical impact of epidemics on the developing world.
Engage with the ethics and root causes that contribute to poor health outcomes among different groups of people
Understand and grapple with the role of the first world countries in the global health economy
Geriatric Medicine
With a growing older adult population, more people living longer with chronic disease, and a changing healthcare landscape, we need a workforce ready to lead and innovate in the area of Geriatrics. Residents who are interested in geriatric medicine are encouraged to learn about and participate in a variety of additional Geriatrics opportunities throughout their residency.
Objectives
Increase medical knowledge about dementia, transition in care, complex care for older adults
Increase comfort with giving talks in the community to older adults
Experience (in more depth than the residency) innovative models of geriatrics care.
Attend Grand Rounds in Geriatrics at the UW and Project Echo Geriatrics Video Conferences and Geri Lunch Series to begin to develop Geriatrics specific expertise.
Participate in Geriatrics specific QI projects on topics already underway (advance care planning) or topics of your choice (delirium, transitions in care, etc).
LGBTQI+
The LGBTQI+ population has often been marginalized due to provider discomfort or patients’ fears of disclosing their sexual orientations or gender identities. Family Medicine Physicians are in the best setting to care for this population with our ability to form long-term relationships with our patients. Seattle is one of those great cities where we have a multitude of services for our LGBTQI+ patients. For those interested in expanding their knowledge in LGBTQI+ healthcare, Swedish First Hill Family Medicine Residency Program is proud to offer our LGBTQI+ Area of Concentration. Please contact Kevin Wang to discuss.
Objectives
This area of concentration will provide you with additional training to gain further expertise in the care of LGBTQ patients. This experience will provide you more opportunities to partner with Seattle's (and Washington's) LGBTQI+ community through advocacy, community service and additional medical training.
Work with community-based organizations who provide support for our LGBTQI+ communities
Gain leadership skills to advocate for the LGBTQI+ community
Provide education for our local healthcare providers
HIV Medicine
HIV medicine has changed since it was initially discovered in the 1980s when it was initially known as the gay plague, gay cancer, gay pneumonia and Gay Related Immune Deficiency Syndrome. What was a 100% mortality rate has now become a chronic disease managed by antiviral medications and can be prevented with the use of preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP). HIV care used to be solely in the realm of specialists. Through advocacy efforts of many providers, primary care providers can effectively treat patients with HIV. For those interested in becoming certified in HIV medicine, Swedish First Hill Family Medicine Residency Program is excited to offer their HIV Area of Concentration. Please contact Peter Kuhn and discuss with your advisor about your interest and scheduling.
Objectives
This area of concentration will provide you with additional training to gain further expertise in the care of patients with HIV. This one to two year experience will provide you with a continuity clinic to start patients on treatment, manage their medications, complications, side effects along with gain additional experience in HIV prevention.
Obstetrics
The obstetrics area of concentration at Swedish Family Medicine Residency provides additional training in normal and high-risk obstetrics.
Residents work one month at a time in both their second and third years at one of three rotation sites. The three rotation sites are: Birth and Family Medicine in Edmonds, WA with Dr Marci Nelson, Family Health Centers in Brewster, WA with Dr Jimmy Wallace, and a high volume site still to be determined.
Objectives
In addition, residents concentrating in Obstetrics participate in 10 OB Fellowship teaching conferences in advanced obstetrics in a longitudinal fashion throughout the year. Relevant portions of Williams and Gabbe texts in obstetrics, ACOG practice bulletins, Up-to-date monographs, and current journal articles are reviewed to expand the residents' obstetric fund of knowledge.
Lastly, residents choosing this area of concentration will be expected to help teach workshops and possibly present at our annual March Ob High-Risk Obstetrics for the Family Physician conference.
Reproductive Health
Swedish First Hill Family Medicine understands the importance of family planning and reproductive health in any community. Our residency program offers training with community providers to gain further knowledge in family planning and procedures related to reproductive health so our residents can provide this very important aspect of reproductive health.
