Prior to starting your elective: Review elective schedule with advisor at least 3 months prior to the start of this block. 4-5 Continuity clinics will need to be scheduled during the block as well as your elective experience.
Dr. Whitehead operates on Tuesdays. He welcomes residents to scrub in.

Goals: The resident will become more familiar with common primary care ophthalmology conditions, and understand when and how to refer patients for specialist eye care.
Objectives:Medical Knowledge        1.  The resident will be able to accurately diagnose common eye conditions, including 

  • Refractive Errors.

  • Glaucoma.

  • Cataract.

  • Age-Related Macular Degeneration.

  • Amblyopia.

  • Diabetic Retinopathy.

  • Retinal Detachment or Tear.

  • Dry Eye Syndrome.

  • Pink Eye

  • Corneal abrasion

  • Foreign body

  • Infections and inflammatory conditions

        2.  The resident will know how to manage pink eye.
        3.  The resident will know how to perform eye exams in children.      Patient Care:        1.  The resident will be able to educate patients effectively on eye problems        2.  The resident will be competent in effective use of consultant ophthalmologists
Interpersonal and Communication Skills:        1.  The resident will be competent in communicating with consultants and patients
Professionalism:        1.  Take initiative to prepare for ophthalmology rotation with reading materials outlined on the website.        2.  Accept responsibility for continuity of care.
