CURRICULUM COMPONENTS:
1) Didactic training session on Pediatric Oral Health
2) Pediatric Oral Health care administered through the individual clinic sites
3) Smiles For Life- supplementary on-line curriculum
DETAILS
1)DIDACTIC TRAINING SESSION
Residents will receive a 1.5-2 hour interactive didactic training session focused on Pediatric Oral Health at least once during their 3 years of training. This is facilitated by the WA Dental Service Foundation. Any resident that misses this training session should complete Modules 2 & 6 of the Smiles For Life on-line curriculum (see below).
2)ON-SITE CLINIC PEDIATRIC ORAL HEALTH CARE
Pediatric oral health care is then administered through the individual clinic sites & involves 3 components:
A)Oral Health Exam
·Knee-to-knee with parent/caregiver
· Lift the lip
· Dry the teeth
· Look for white spot lesions (early caries)
· Goal: 2x/year

· Billing (Medicaid): D0120 (AMBP1134) PERIODIC ORAL EVAL-ESTABLISHED PATIENT
B)Fluoride Varnish
· Dry the teeth & apply generously
· Instructions: avoid crunchy snacks today & don’t brush this evening
· Goal: apply 2-3x/year

· Billing (Medicaid): D1206 TOPICAL APPLICATION OF FLUORIDE-CHILD
C)Patient Education
· See a dentist by age 1
· Brush with a fluoride containing toothpaste (not the infant ones) 2x/d. Use just a smear if they are under 2yo.
· No bottle at bedtime (w/ anything other than water)
· Diet: limit sugary/chewy snacks & give the teeth a 2 hour break between eating
· Teach parents to lift the lip to look for white spots/decay.

3) SMILES FOR LIFE
Smiles for Lifeis the nation's only comprehensive oral health curriculum. Modules 2 & 6 should be completed by any residents that missed the didactic training. Developed by the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine Group on Oral Health, this curriculum is designed to enhance the role of primary care clinicians in the promotion of oral health for all age groups through the development and dissemination of high-quality educational resources.
Each module is a 45 min PowerPoint presentation followed by a case. Modules are as follows:

Module 3: Adult Oral Health
Module 4: Acute Dental Problems
Module 5: Oral Health and the Pregnant Patient
Module 6: Fluoride Varnish
Module 7: The Oral Examination
Module 8: Geriatric Oral Health
