PROGRAM GOALS:
Residents will work alongside outpatient palliative care specialists in consult clinics to evaluate patient’s physical needs and need for psychological & spiritual support while dealing with their serious illness.
They will also learn how to help with social and family adjustments and how to help coordinate resources. Focus will be on developing skills in the outpatient setting to help patients with:
Uncontrolled pain
Symptoms that aren’t responding to treatment
Severe nausea or vomiting
Shortness of breath
Psychological distress (anxiety, agitation, emotional or spiritual anguish)
Uncertainty about health-care decision, quality of life or progress of disease
Residents will see patients one day a week at each of the First Hill and Cherry Hill outpatient palliative care sites (*alternatively Edmonds, dependent on coordinating between clinics and resident’s schedules). Residents may also opt to spend one week (week 2 or 3) exclusively with the inpatient palliative care service- efforts will need to be made that this week does not coincide with the geriatric fellow’s inpatient palliative care rotations.

These video support tools are carefully crafted after undergoing rigorous review by leading experts. Presently, the video support tools are not for individual use. Although they provide basic information and a general framework for having The Conversation, they are no substitute for the patient-provider conversation.
