From the RRC: Residents must have at least 100 hours dedicated to health system management experiences. This curriculum should prepare residents to be active participants and leaders in their practices, their communities, and the profession of medicine.

Much of our practice management learning happens within our three residency clinics, including:

  • Monthly clinic business meetings with providers and staff

  • More frequent clinic team meetings to focus on practice efficiency, as well as policies and procedures involving clinical staff

  • Review of clinical performance measures, including productivity, clinical quality and patient satisfaction

The practice management curriculum is taught throughout all three years, with a series of residency-wide didactic sessions.  There are also small-group interactive sessions in clinic month tailored for each group’s level of training.  Topics include:  billing and coding, the basics of Medicare, effective use of the EMR, quality improvement, and technology in practice.

Every resident participates in a quality improvement project within his or her clinic through our practice-based learning curriculum.

The bulk of our practice management small-group teaching happens during the residents’ third year in a dedicated session called R3 morning.  These half-day sessions provide opportunities for in-depth teaching about practice and leadership challenges that family physicians will face.

Residents receive protected time to attend the King County Academy of Family Physicians Practice Management Seminar, which is a 2-day seminar focused on preparing family medicine residents from western Washington to transition into practice.  The seminar schedule includes a job fair known as “Pick a Partner, Pick a Practice,” where residents can network with interested employers from around Washington state.
