Sound Mental Health1600 E Olive St., Seattle, WA 98122.  On Mondays building B and on Thursdays building A.

GOAL: 

The goal of the Psychiatry and Community Mental Health elective is to provide residents the opportunity to work alongside psychiatrists and DNPs in providing high-quality mental health care to vulnerable populations in the community. Residents will complete this rotation with our community partner at Sound, which is one of King County’s most comprehensive providers of mental health and addiction treatment services.

OBJECTIVES:

-Increase knowledge of DSM-5 criteria for a broad array of mental illnesses

-Implement accurate differential diagnosis for a variety of mental illnesses, including co-occurring substance use disorders and personality disorders

-Provide pharmacotherapies and become well-versed in their side effects

-Become familiar with local community resources for vulnerable populations

-Address mental health crises, including severe suicidal ideation, with appropriate risk assessment and safety planning

-Demonstrate humanism in treating mental illness and strive to decrease stigma
