Rotation Goals:

  • Gain competency in the diagnosis & treatment of common pediatric outpatient acute & chronic illness.

  • Gain competency in the provision of well child care, including immunizations & oral health.

  • Learn to effectively counsel parents & provide anticipatory guidance.

  • Understand when to appropriately refer pediatric patients to specialty care.

Rotation Objectives

  1. Patient Care

    • Be able to quickly diagnose respiratory distress, a toxic child, anaphylaxis & other acute pediatric issues & treat appropriately.

    • Develop an appropriate management plan for obesity, asthma & other chronic pediatric illness utilizing established guidelines.

    • Understand & apply screening tests and other preventive care that are evidence-based or standard of care.

    • Develop a comprehensive differential diagnosis for pediatric patients with undifferentiated signs, symptoms, or health concerns, and prioritize an appropriate evaluation and treatment plan.

    • Provide an oral health exam & competently apply fluoride varnish.

  2. Medical Knowledge

    • Recognize & appropriately evaluate a heart murmur in a pediatric patient.

    • Be familiar with all the components of a pediatric well child exam at all ages including anticipatory guidance.

    • Assess and treat allergic rhinitis & eczema; counsel parents about food allergies.

  3. Systems Based Practice

    • Knows and considers costs and risks/benefits of different treatment options in common situations

    • Understand how the pediatric patient’s community can affect the patient’s health, in particular childhood obesity.

    • Make appropriate referrals & coordinate care with pediatric specialists when necessary.

  4. Practice-based Learning & Improvement

    • Use point-of-care, evidence-based information and guidelines to answer clinical questions.

    • Compare care provided in our Family Medicine clinics with care provided at Polyclinic Pediatric and identify areas for improvement.

  5. Professionalism

    • Arrive on time to all scheduled rotation elements & participate in the learning experience meaningfully.

    • Complete required reading for the rotation (see bottom of this webpage).

    • Actively seek constructive feedback from outside attendings.

  6. Communication

    • Demonstrate ability to communicate effectively with patients & families re: anticipatory guidance and treatment plan.

    • Communicate effectively & collaboratively with teaching attendings.

3. If a scheduled Pediatrician/Specialist will be out on vacation:

  • each specialty contact should contact the Swedish FHFM administrative contact

  • admin staff will e-mail the resident & assist in re-scheduling with one of the suggested substitute experiences (see above)
